International Cultural Festival Bringing Bristol Communities Together

More than 3,300 people came together to celebrate the rich diversity of Bristol’s communities at this year’s International Cultural Festival at Sparks Bristol on June 6th, creating a vibrant day filled with music, dance, food, art and cultural exchange. The event marked the launch of Bristol Refugee Festival which took place 6th – 21st June.

Sparks Bristol welcomed 3,305 visitors, who enjoyed an exciting programme featuring 27 arts and crafts traders, 10 food traders, live performances, interactive workshops and family-friendly activities. The event provided a platform for communities from across Bristol and beyond to share their traditions, talents and stories while fostering understanding, inclusion and connection.

Throughout the day, audiences were treated to a spectacular line-up of performances, including energetic Latin American dance, powerful African drumming, and a colourful international fashion show featuring traditional and contemporary outfits from Sudan, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, India and Pakistan.

Visitors also had the opportunity to take part in a wide range of hands-on workshops, including Polish Folk Art, Chinese Calligraphy, Sudanese Textiles, Flamenco, Essential Oils for Health and Wellbeing, and an interactive African drumming, singing and dancing workshop. Families enjoyed face painting and a dedicated arts and crafts corner for children, ensuring there was something for all ages.

Beyond the entertainment and activities, the festival’s greatest achievement was its ability to bring people together. Attendees, traders, performers and volunteers all highlighted the welcoming atmosphere and sense of community that made the event so special.

Bonica, a youth volunteer, said:

“This experience has genuinely given me so much more confidence in a public-facing environment with such a diverse audience, and a genuine chance to meet so many talented and lovely people. Thank you so much for organising and for Sparks to provide an umbrella for people to connect, especially in times of uncertainty.”

For many participants, the festival provided an invaluable opportunity to showcase their culture and connect with new audiences.

Angie, a food trader attending for the first time, commented:

“Thank you all for your hard work in making this event happen. You gave us an amazing space to showcase our efforts, share our cultures, and perform for all to enjoy. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn’t just about being there, but the taking part that made it feel so special for everyone. I am saluting the team for a brilliant job.”

Community participant Isra Ibrahim praised the continued support provided through Sparks Bristol, saying:

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Sparks for always giving us opportunities, supporting us continuously, and inspiring us with new ideas. I am truly grateful and thankful for everything they do. The event was amazing, the celebration was even more wonderful, and the organisation was exceptionally well planned and executed.”

The International Cultural Festival demonstrates the power of culture to bring people together, creating opportunities for meaningful conversations, new friendships and stronger community connections. By celebrating the traditions, creativity and contributions of Bristol’s diverse communities, the festival continues to play an important role in building a more inclusive and connected city.

With record engagement from visitors, traders, performers and volunteers, organisers are already looking ahead to future events that will continue to showcase Bristol’s rich cultural diversity and strengthen community bonds.
