In Memory of Norman Routledge

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Norman Routledge.
I first met Norman when he made an unsuccessful bid for Jacobs Wells Baths. Undeterred, he went on to take on The Mount Without, saving it from ruin and transforming it into one of Bristol’s loveliest venues, which generously supports Impermanence Dance Theatre. Norman’s vision and determination for restoring heritage buildings were evident in his tireless campaign for Ashton Court Mansion. In May 2019, he set out a clear roadmap in an email to BCC councillors and other stakeholders:

“We need to form a Building Preservation Trust, as a charity”

“We need to invite all interested parties to apply to join, and pick a strong team with complimentary skills”

“We need to rejuvenate the “friends of ACM” group, to keep everyone informed and on board”.

“We need to get a 99/125 year lease from the council, and have 10 years rent free to do up the Mansion”

“We need to prove we have the funds, and the skills to Restore the Mansion House”

“We need to prove the project is sustainable (As it is at Kings Weston House)”

Despite many setbacks, he never gave up. He established the Bristol Historic Buildings Trust (BHBT) and continued to campaign with unwavering dedication. With his cheeky grin and “who dares wins” attitude, he persevered with good humour, kindness, and remarkable determination. In October 2025, Bristol City councillors agreed to give BHBT exclusivity to develop a business plan to take over Ashton Court Mansion and carry out essential repairs. Norman’s 2019 vision had been achieved.
On Friday 14th November, he messaged me to thank ASLS for our guidance and support. Even in his final moments, he was generous in his appreciation of others. We are deeply saddened that Norman will not be here to see Ashton Court Mansion come back to life under BHBT’s stewardship. His legacy is assured, through the buildings he has secured for future generations. The name Norman Routledge will be as intrinsically connected to the story of Ashton Court Mansion as the Smyth family name has been through the centuries.

Our heartfelt condolences are with his daughter Charlotte, his grandchildren, and with all his family and friends.

We will miss you Norman.
